We already knew Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin was a popular guy, but when it comes to social media followers he reigns supreme among all other NHLers.
Through the month of September across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, Ovi is twice as popular as anyone in the league with 4.2 million total followers.
According to data compiled by social media data firm HookIt, the Caps’ captain has 2.7 million followers on Twitter, 120,500 on Facebook and 1.4 million on Instagram. At the moment, he is the only player in the league with more than 1 million Instagram followers.
At No. 2 is Nashville Predators’ P.K. Subban who has a combined 2.1 million total followers across all three platforms.
Teammate T.J. Oshie is the next Caps player on the list at No. 9 with 758,100 total followers. All of that partying over the summer by Ovechkin and Oshie must have grabbed the attention of social media users around the world.
Since everything is a competition between the Caps and the Penguins, Phil Kessel tops the list for the Pens at No. 16 with 554,200 total followers followed by Sidney Crosby at No. 20 with 507,200 total followers. We will give Crosby an unwanted break as he does not have an Instagram account.
As far as NHL teams’ social media followings go, the Caps come in at No. 12 with 2.2 million total followers. The Chicago Blackhawks are No. 1 at 6.7 million total followers.
